Nowadays, society is required to learn
languages, and mostly English, which has begun the most important language all
around the world and everybody is learning it. Students must get a certificate
in a determinated level of English to get their university degrees and you are
asked for it when you apply for a job even if you want to work as a cleaner or
as a dustman, although probably they are never going to use other language
different to their mother tongue. Despite the importance languages have, many people
who are supposed to represent our country don’t even know how to keep a
conversation going fluently, so how can we stand being asked for aspects that
the ones who ask us for them don’t have?
Lately, there has been a huge controversy with
Ana Botella’s occurrence in TV when she had to represent Madrid in the Olympic
Game’s call because of her bad English.
On the one hand, it is true that the way she
expressed herself was ridiculously bad. It seemed like if she had prepared it
before and she had studied it to talk quickly like if she was doing a test.
Besides, her pronunciation was awful and everybody talked about her the day
after in every single social web, mostly students, who are asked for high marks
just to get a grant or who can’t allow spending such a high amount of money to
enroll university and who see that after all, important people like they are
supposed to be, know the half they know and have the triple they have.
On the other hand, it is only one case between
thousands. People saw Ana Botella and she obviously called the attention but we
should not forget that there are many people who are as important as she is and
inasmuch as we do not see them very often on TV we do not realize the knowledge
they have, but it could be even worse than hers.
